The Flower Bulb Research Program investigates horticultural practices, physiology, carbohydrate metabolism, post-harvest physiology and handling of floriculture crops and herbaceous perennials. Much of the research focuses on flower bulbs and supported by and in collaboration with the Royal Dutch Wholesalers Association for Flowerbulbs and Nursery Stock and the North American Flowerbulb Wholesalers’ Association.
We study the internal and external (environmental) controls of carbon partitioning in greenhouse crops, and look for ways to improve horticultural crop quality by exploiting crop carbohydrate content or metabolism. The program incorporates relatively applied whole-plant greenhouse/outdoor studies with more basic laboratory experiments appropriate to the specific questions being asked.
We also trial new releases of annual crops and conduct observations and demonstrations of annual and perennial flowers at our Bluegrass Lane Research Center. See: Bluegrass Lane Annuals and Bluegrass Lane Perennials.
